Places to eat and visit in Addis

Places to eat in Addis

Addis Ababa, the capital city, has a rich and unexpected food culture. And more than just great meals, this is food that comes with a story. Ethiopia is a country that serves up grass-fed beef and organic vegetables by default. There are no trendy macro-organic-vegan movements; rather, the livestock graze in open fields.

Kategna: A great place to try Ethiopian food; they serve a range of entrées that are good quality and reasonably priced. They also have an ongoing coffee ceremony complete with traditional methods of preparation and incense. Overall it is a great place to go for a taste of Ethiopian culture and food.

Yod Abyssinia: The large dining area is crammed with low wooden stools that all face a stage; at around 7.30pm, musicians, dancers and singers perform traditional acts from around Ethiopia. The food, too, is some of the best traditional food and it's a good place to try tej (honey wine).

La Mandoline restaurant: This upper-crust French restaurant serving superb, and authentic, traditional French dishes is still one of the best restaurants in the capital. Try an excellent salad for starter, a delicious steak with Roquefort sauce for main and crème brûlée for dessert, and you won’t know you’re not in La Belle France.

Sishu Burger: There is a fantastic café called Sishu located at Kerra, Worke's Promise Building Complex in Addis – wonderful burgers, nice if slightly odd flavored milk and fantastic tarts – a real relief for those desperate for a rest from injera…. It also contains expansive play areas for children. We recommend trying it out next time you are in Addis!
